People are constantly struggling with different issues around the world. Whatever people's personal issues might be, there are some basic needs and rights to be pursued for all. Every single person should be entitled to a solid and stable roof above his/her head, the right to live in a safe and secure environment and the right to acceptance of one's religion, ethnicity, race, gender and other human distinctions.
The United Nations fights to grant every person such fundamental rights, to relieve suffering in these areas, and especially to promote awareness about these issues. Migration, peace and tolerance are interrelated. Intolerance is often the cause of war, war is often the cause of migration and migration can in turn cause intolerance. Our goal is to break this vicious cycle.
By filming your issue we hope that you create awareness; that you take out your camera and film those issues that you find important, so that we together can create awareness and promote the general knowledge on pressing global issues such as migration, peace and tolerance.
The film is our one of the most important ways to convey your message. It is visual and catching, real and accessible. Films are expressions. Films are made by artists. Artists are often driven by passion, a sense of responsibility. As the world embarks on the year 2007, streams of moving people influence our neighborhoods, our news and our policies. War and conflict rage in many places and intolerance has led to some major shifts in mentality. We encourage you to continue making movies about what you see, what you hear and what you think. We encourage you to dedicate your artistic talents, make movies and thus contribute in raising awareness on global issues of undeniable importance.

The United Nations Department of Public Information presents three global issues that you experience or are affected by in your own environment:
MIGRATION is the mass movement of people, legally or illegally, voluntarily or forced, in search of a better life. We see evidence of it in our cities, towns and villages. Migration is also triggered by economic necessity or persecution, conflict or war. Students can be creative about their experience with immigrants or their own experience as immigrants.

"International migration is a fundamental attribute of our ever-shrinking world.
Managing this migration for the benefit of all has become one of the great challenges of our age."

PEACE is a universal quest. The maintenance of peace and security is the raison d'etre of the United Nations. How is peace maintained in your neighborhood. Where is there an absence of peace? Students are challenged to make a film depicting peace.

"For the fortunate amongst us, peace is a day-to-day reality;
our streets are safe, our children go to school, where the fabric of society is strong,
the precious gifts of peace can almost go unremarked and be taken for granted.
But for far too many people in the world of today, those gifts are only an illusive dream.
They live in chains, a climax of fear and insecurity."
Secretary-General Kofi Annan
TOLERANCE – In its extreme, intolerance leads to conflicts and wars. There is also racial, ethnic, and religious intolerance, as was evident in conflicts such as in Bosnia and Rwanda. Intolerance can be overcome by: law, education, access to information, individual awareness and local solutions. Tolerance is thus a political, legal and moral duty to protect and preserve human rights. Can you film acts of intolerance or solutions to intolerance?
