2008 Competition: Issues

First Amendment & Free Speech - USA TODAY

Let your VOICE be heard!

Can you name the 5 freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment?

Did you know that more Americans can name the 5 main characters from the Simpsons cartoon than can name these important freedoms?

People all over the world are fighting and dying to receive the rights to free expression guaranteed to Americans. That Americans have the ability to openly debate political issues; that individuals aren't persecuted for their opposition to the government; that participation in petitions, protests, strikes, and marches are all commonplace in this country; many of us forget is a luxury.

USA TODAY has teamed up with FYI - Film Your Issue again this year because we support FYI's mission to encourage young people to take advantage of the First Amendment and to express their voice through film. The mission of USA TODAY Education is to introduce young people to the news and issues of the day, and to help them form their own opinions in order to find their voice.

We will select a film for the FYI - USA TODAY award from those whose content focuses on an issue related to the First Amendment. It can depict the struggle for freedom of expression, constructive ways to use these freedoms, or what happens in a society where free expression of ideas is unwelcome.

USA TODAY Education also encourages students to explore issues on our website, and to host on campus discussions or debates about issues through our VOICES initiative. Please visit www.voices.usatoday.com to learn more.
